Privacy Policy

BoboLearns is a collection of free learning sites run by Babar Ali as a free personal project ("we", "us"). This policy covers bobolearns.com and its subdomains, including lingo.bobolearns.com and chess.bobolearns.com (together, the "Services"). We keep it short and plain on purpose. For privacy law purposes, Babar Ali, an individual based in Washington State, USA, is responsible for your data.

1. What we collect

  • Account details. Your email address and, if you sign in with Google or Apple, the name and profile details that provider shares with us. If you sign up with email, we store a securely hashed password. We never see or store your Google or Apple password.
  • Learning activity. Lessons you complete, quiz scores, time spent studying, streaks, your daily goal and similar progress data, so we can show your stats across the Services.
  • AI messages. If you use an AI tutor or coach feature, the messages you send are processed to generate replies. Please don't enter sensitive personal information into them.
  • Basic technical data. Standard server logs such as IP address, browser type and pages requested, used for security and troubleshooting.
  • Messages to us. If you email us, we keep your message and address so we can reply.

2. Camera and microphone (Chess)

Playing Chess on a real board uses your device's camera. The camera feed is analyzed in your browser to read the board and detect moves. The video is not uploaded to us or to any third party, and we do not record or store it. Your board calibration is saved only in your browser's local storage. The page may also ask for microphone permission for a spoken coach feature. Today the microphone is not used to record or transmit audio. If that changes, we will update this policy first. You can revoke camera and microphone access at any time in your browser settings.

3. Cookies and similar storage

We use a small number of strictly necessary cookies and browser storage. The main one is a sign-in session cookie scoped to .bobolearns.com so that logging in on one BoboLearns site keeps you logged in on the others. We use local storage to remember preferences such as your daily goal, camera calibration and, if you aren't signed in, in-progress study data on your own device. We do not use advertising, analytics or cross-site tracking cookies. Our pages load fonts from Google Fonts, which means Google receives your IP address and browser details when a page loads.

4. How we use information, and our legal bases

  • To create and secure your account and keep you signed in, and to save your progress and show your stats across the Services. (Performing our agreement with you.)
  • To provide AI features. (Performing our agreement with you.)
  • To keep the Services safe, prevent abuse, fix problems and improve the lessons. (Our legitimate interests.)
  • To reply to you and send essential account emails such as confirmation and password reset links. (Performing our agreement with you, and our legitimate interests.)
  • To meet legal obligations. (Legal obligation.)

We do not sell your personal information, we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we do not use it for advertising.

5. Who we share it with

We share data only with service providers that help us run the Services, and only as needed:

  • Supabase for authentication and database storage.
  • Hostinger for website hosting.
  • Google for Google Fonts and, if you choose, Google sign-in, and Apple if you choose Sign in with Apple.
  • AI providers that process the messages you send to AI features so they can generate responses. These currently include Google and DeepSeek, and may change over time or include others such as Anthropic. Those providers handle your messages under their own terms and privacy policies, and may keep them for a period. They are not sent to us for any other purpose, so please avoid putting personal details in them.

We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, safety and security of our users and the Services.

6. Retention

We keep your account and learning data for as long as your account is active. If you ask us to delete your account, we will delete or anonymize your personal data within 30 days, except where we must keep something for legal or security reasons. Backups may take a short additional time to clear.

7. Your choices and rights

You can ask us to access, correct, export or delete your personal data at any time by emailing hello@babarali.com. Please write from the email address on your account. If you can't access it, tell us and we will verify you another way. We will respond within 30 days.

If you are in the EU, UK or a similar region, you also have the right to object to or restrict certain processing, to withdraw consent where we rely on it, and to complain to your local data protection authority. If you are a California or other U.S. state resident, you have the right to know, access, correct and delete your personal information, and we will not discriminate against you for using these rights. We do not sell or share personal information as those laws define the terms. You can also clear cookies in your browser, though you will be signed out.

8. Security

We use reasonable safeguards, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and database access rules that limit each user to their own data. No online service can guarantee perfect security, so please use a strong, unique password. If a breach affects your personal data, we will notify you and the relevant authorities as the law requires.

9. Children

You must be at least 13 to use the Services with an account. In places where the minimum age for consenting to online services is higher (up to 16 in some EU countries), you need your parent or guardian's permission. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

10. International users and transfers

We are based in the United States, and our providers may process data in the United States and other countries, which may have different data protection laws than yours. Where required, we rely on safeguards such as the providers' standard contractual clauses or equivalent mechanisms for these transfers.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the effective date above, and for significant changes we will make a reasonable effort to let you know.
